Yesterday I picked up my mail and headed to the carpool line. In my pile of mail was a CD from Music Moms to review. I peeled off the shrink wrap & popped it in my CD player…and continued to sort through my mail. I didn’t really pay attention to what the CD was…I was more focused on the Property Tax bill that had arrived (ackkkk!). What I heard coming out of my CD player was amazing! It was hip, classical, rock-n-roll, and beautiful. What was I listening to? David Garrett’s (the best-selling new classical artist of 2009) second album Rock Symphonies. I was listening to him play the violin to Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit. That perked me up…and made me grab the CD case and read it inside and out. This guy is awesome! He also does Walk This Way, Live And Let Die, and Kashmir. In addition to classic rock-and-roll songs, he takes classical songs and mixes them up to make them super hip. My favorite? The 5th, which is his new rendition of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5. Honestly, I must live in a cave or something because I had never heard of David Garrett before yesterday. He has been on Oprah, The Today Show and Good Morning America. I am going to Tivo his concert from his sold out Berlin show this month when it airs on PBS. I can’t wait to see him perform. He is super rock-and-roll looking – long hair, big rings, and guy liner. In fact, when my 15 year old daughter finally came out of school and got in the car I thought she was immediately going to turn the CD off and switch to her favorite radio station. Instead, she looked at me and said “OMG is this David Garrett?” As it turns out, she doesn’t live under the same rock that I do and is a HUGE David Garrett fan. Guess what? I scored major Mom cool points for listening to something that I liked. Score! You can visit his site to sample some of his music (or to watch him make his magic with the violin).
I received a copy of this CD from Music Moms to review. They did not compensate me for my opinion. And it is just that, my own opinion.
I try to be eco-friendly and reuse/re-purpose when possible. In fact, you should see what I can accomplish with a can of spray paint (which technically, isn’t great for the environment). Have you ever used a product that came in a really cool jar that you just hated to throw out? It could be a fancy jelly jar or a really cool shaped mustard jar. I found a company that makes jar tops that will transform your cool shaped jar into a useful container – sugar shaker, creamer, cruet, and more. They come in 2 colors – green & black and cost $25 for the set. Put these on my wish list please!!
I have been reading more and more about Kettlebell workouts. They are cast iron weights with a handle that look like a doorstop. Supposedly, you can torch some major calories in no time at all. You can actually burn almost 300 calories in just 20 minutes – plus because it is muscle sculpting, you body will continue to burn calories for up to 24 hours after you exercise! The Kettlebells make moves that you used to do with a dumbbell more challenging because the weight isn’t evenly distributed. This means your stabilizer muscles have to work harder. I found a workout that I want to try – but my gym isn’t on the Kettlebell bandwagon yet. You can buy them everywhere – sports stores, Target, Walmart, and more. I am not sure what weight I should buy. 15lb? 20lb? I think the way to go is to buy a Kettlestack – an adjustable Kettlebell. This way, I can change the weight for different exercises or as I progress. Have you tried Kettlebells? What do you think of them?
One thing you might not know about me is that I have a ton of freckles…and get them by the dozen if I even see the sun for a second. If I am not getting more freckles I am getting red. Red like a lobster! I was super excited when I found out about Neutrogena UltraSheer Liquid daily sunblock. First of all, it is SPF 70. Perfect! The best part? It is super light and sheer…you can put it on before you put on your make up and you will never know it is there. I was scared that it was going to be greasy – not the case. I am so happy to have found something that I can use everyday (and so is my dermatologist!).
There are actually some pretty decent freebies this week…
This is awesome….become a Treehead and not only receive a free sample of a biodegradable trash bag. What a great idea!
Receive a free Smart for Life cookie and underWay beverage (remember when I blogged about them before?) I love their products!
Free T-shirt from $1Oil.com…just look on the left side of the page, free organic coupons and information, adult gummy vitamin sample (finally…they made these for grown ups!), free subscription to Soap Opera Weekly, free Neti Pot, Cheetos Mighty Zingers sample.
Recently I received a Waterpik Medallion Shower Head to test out. I am all over trying out new products – and was super excited to give this one a whirl! Mike installed it in no time (without any trips to Home Depot either!) and I was ready to give it a try. It looked pretty complicated hanging in my shower…I was a little intimidated. Plus, the last time we updated our shower head we ended up with horrible water pressure because of the new guidelines for saving water.
I hopped in the shower and was super pleased! You can choose from 5 different settings – the dial is on the handle so you don’t have to stick your hand in the water spray- and get water all over the place. Don’t you just hate getting squirted in the eyes while you are trying to set your spray up? My favorite setting is the “misting” selection. It feels like you are out in the rain – I love it. I use the concentrated center to get the shampoo out of my hair. The best part? It doesn’t feel like a “low flow” shower head. They use OptiFlow technology that increases the water flow by 30%. It really has made my shower more enjoyable. Sometimes just a little change can make a big difference. Think about it….you shower every day….shouldn’t you enjoy it?
Sorry for the lack of a post today….the start of school & an extremely busy (but super fun) weekend left me with no time to write! I promise to get back in the swing of things this week.
You know I am all about looking good while working out. The worst is looking like a sweaty mess! Sometimes I get really sick of wearing a hat every time I work out. This is where Sweaty Bands come to the rescue. I first saw Sweaty Bands at the Peachtree Road Race Expo in July – and was hooked!
So what exactly is a Sweaty Band? They describe themselves as the ultimate sports and fitness headband, uniquely designed for women and girls who want to show their style, even when they sweat a while! They are these super cute headbands that come in a bazillion cute styles – the beauty is that your hair looks super cute, stays out of your face, and you won’t have sweat pouring into your eyes! Not only do they stay put, they don’t give you a headache while wearing them….don’t you hate when a headband squeezes your head? It has a really cool lining that soaks up the sweat. The hardest part is choosing which one you want – they come in 2 sizes and a ton of colors/patterns.
Check out their site to see the Sweaty Bands in action – and to look at all the awesome bands that they have to offer!
Ugh. School starts today. I hate it! I love having my girls home with me during the Summer and totally miss them when they go back to school. I can’t stand eating lunch by myself everyday. Do you send in a gift to the teacher on the first day? My girls always took a bouquet of flowers for their teacher. Of course we are out of elementary school…. which makes the gift giving a little more difficult/void. Some of my favorites ideas are….
A bunch of highlighters in a metal bucket with a note attatched that reads “you are the highlight of our year”.
A great set of notepads…preferably personalized….Check out Monogram Me….and take $10 off of your Monogram Me order when you add personalized paper to your order (through August 31st).
Another great personalized gift is a stamp. Teachers love these! They can stamp their books, notes, and more.
Candy is always nice. How about a giant container of LifeSavers with a note that says “you are a lifesaver”? Another great idea is a teacher survival kit. You can either make your own or buy one. I love the Shemergency Kit. It has everything from advil, lotion, sewing kit, and breath freshener to tampons..quite a handy little bag. If you need a fairly low cost gift for someone this is a life-saver for only $20.
Another great one is the The On The Go Kit . This is a small little tin that contains an emery board, dental flossers, sewing kit, hairband, bandages, and stain wipes. The quick fix for things that happen away from home! For $9.50 you can stick some money for the vending machine in it and your teacher will be thrilled!
Freebies are still not that great this week…must be a Summer lull. Let’s hope so!
