Yesterday I picked up my mail and headed to the carpool line. In my pile of mail was a CD from Music Moms to review. I peeled off the shrink wrap & popped it in my CD player…and continued to sort through my mail. I didn’t really pay attention to what the CD was…I was more focused on the Property Tax bill that had arrived (ackkkk!). What I heard coming out of my CD player was amazing! It was hip, classical, rock-n-roll, and beautiful. What was I listening to? David Garrett’s (the best-selling new classical artist of 2009) second album Rock Symphonies. I was listening to him play the violin to Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit. That perked me up…and made me grab the CD case and read it inside and out. This guy is awesome! He also does Walk This Way, Live And Let Die, and Kashmir. In addition to classic rock-and-roll songs, he takes classical songs and mixes them up to make them super hip. My favorite? The 5th, which is his new rendition of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5. Honestly, I must live in a cave or something because I had never heard of David Garrett before yesterday. He has been on Oprah, The Today Show and Good Morning America. I am going to Tivo his concert from his sold out Berlin show this month when it airs on PBS. I can’t wait to see him perform. He is super rock-and-roll looking – long hair, big rings, and guy liner. In fact, when my 15 year old daughter finally came out of school and got in the car I thought she was immediately going to turn the CD off and switch to her favorite radio station. Instead, she looked at me and said “OMG is this David Garrett?” As it turns out, she doesn’t live under the same rock that I do and is a HUGE David Garrett fan. Guess what? I scored major Mom cool points for listening to something that I liked. Score! You can visit his site to sample some of his music (or to watch him make his magic with the violin).
I received a copy of this CD from Music Moms to review. They did not compensate me for my opinion. And it is just that, my own opinion.
