Candy

I received a box of goodies the other day and one of the things in the box was a few packs of candy cigarettes. I was kinda perplexed…I didn’t even know they made them anymore. I can’t really imagine kids sitting around pretend smoking their candy. I did have a flashback to the gum cigarettes that I used to love…you know the ones where you blow on them and a puff of flour comes out that is supposed to look like you are really smoking. Again, I wondered in this day and age if they still made them. Yep, they do.

Once I found them I was intrigued by all of the interesting and nostalgic candy out there. Some of it really brings back memories. I remember walking really far (it seemed like miles) to a drive through store to get a caramel lollipop. My sister Amy, cousin Stacey and myself would embark on this journey during our weekends spent at our Grandparents cottage in Ohio. More than the lollipops, we liked the adventure of walking to a store by ourselves – our first real taste of freedom! I also remember the time my mom’s friend Nancy showed up in our driveway and told us we just had to try this new bubble gum – it was Bubble Yum. A nice soft pink square of gum. Or how about Pop Rocks? I’m sure we can all remember our first taste of those. Whenever I see Clark’s Teaberry gum I immediately think of my Dad and long car trips. I don’t even know what a teaberry is…but the gum is kinda minty and kinda cinnamony.

Now my mom…she was all about the Mallo Cup. I always think of her when I happen to see a package of Mallo Cups.

Some people only eat Bit-O-Honey out of their kids Halloween bags. I keep it on hand all year round. Why? Because it actually gets rid of hiccups! I’m not quite sure how I discovered this…but I’m letting you in on an original KatyShops tip.

Do you remember the Cinnamon Hot Dog gum? In Chicago (actually Geneva) I used to walk to a drug store called Henry’s that had a penny candy section. This was one of my favorite things from the penny candy aisle. Henry’s also carried one of the biggest selections of Smurf’s that I have ever seen. I still have my shoebox filled with Smurfs. Riley loves to play with them.

So what will kid’s today remember about their candy? Maddie likes anything sour and can eat SourPatch Kids all day long! Riley doesn’t have much of a sweet tooth…but I know she loves to eat some rolos every now and again.  Me?  I’m all about the Take Fives!
